Surf, recover, repeat

Your host is a surfer and a sports chiropractor.

Dr Kurt Mariano came from Hawaii about 20 years ago for the waves and stayed. He renovated the house himself and lives upstairs, so he'll show you where to paddle out, check you in, and treat that paddle-sore shoulder. No other stay in JBay puts a sports chiropractor in the same house as your surfboard. And you live next to the one and only Bruce Gold.

  • Doctor of Chiropractic, graduated valedictorian, Los Angeles College of Chiropractic
  • Founded and directed The Island Neck & Back Clinic, Honolulu
  • Co-founded Back In Action Rehabilitation Center
  • Postgraduate degrees in orthopaedics and pain management
  • Certified personal trainer and injury-prevention consultant
  • Semi-retired; still consults and treats

Pick your wave from the garden.

You can see most of the JBay breaks from the house. Kurt will show you around the lineup and set you up with lessons and boards.

BoneyardsTop of the point. Lefts and rights over a shallow reef; a locals' favourite.
SupertubesSouth Africa's premier wave and one of the best rights in the world. 4 to 8 ft, rides up to half a kilometre on the right day. Best on a SW wind. Home of the July pro contest.
Impossibles ("Salads")The inside section in front of the car park, where Supers closes out. Where the brave pull in.
TubesShort, intense, barrelling. Best at 4 to 5 ft on a S or SW swell; small take-off, so it can't hold a crowd.
PointThe original 1960s longboard wave. Heavy take-off, then a carving wall. Best at 3 to 8 ft; the place to start your JBay trip.
Kitchen WindowsMellow and fun on the mid-tide, away from the busy spots.
MagnatubesHeavy and unpredictable; 3 to 5 ft on a NW wind at high tide.
AlbatrossOut of town and uncrowded. Needs a NW wind and low tide to come good.
When to comeSW swells from the Roaring Forties run March to September; July and August are the most consistent, with weeks of head-high to double-overhead swell. Summer brings warm water and onshore easterlies.
What to bringTwo boards: a 6'0" to 6'6" for smaller days and a 6'10" to 7'6" for the big stuff. A full suit most of the year, and booties against the mussel-covered rocks at Supers.
Respect the line-upSupers is the most localised spot in the country. Wait your turn, watch how the locals paddle out, and the waves will come.
